Sweet New Pad

i say! o_o
So the new place is now (mostly) set up. To prove it, I will throw some picspam at you all! Sorry the pictures aren't better quality. I can't find my camera cord right now (suspect it might be back at Mom's place), so you'll have to deal with the iPhone for now. I'll replace these pictures with higher quality ones when I can.

Cut for (duh) images )

The only things left that remain to do are: 1) give the suitcases back to Mom and Michele; 2) put that one last box of storage stuff in the basement, or send it back home to put in Dad's garage; and 3) grab the Watchmen standee from home and set it up to block the entryway to the room. I'm sure the cats will still find ways to get into the space despite the effort. XD However, I think the barriers I'm putting up should at least act as a deterrent and make their appearances in here less frequent. Not that I object to the cats; I just don't like them getting in my business at all hours of the day that I'm home.

So, yeah, that's the new living room place! I'm very comfy so far. :3

Life Update + Damned

  • Sep. 13th, 2009 at 12:02 PM
chane - slasher
Sorry for the lack of updates here for the last bit of forever. In terms of life updates, most of that is going on in my Twitter feed now, which can be found at http://twitter.com/eryncerise (feel free to follow me; I'll probably follow you back if I know you). I find it's much easier to post little snippets of what's going on with me rather than making whole big posts about that sort of thing. ^^;

That being said here are the big things I'm working on right now:

- Going to be moving at the end of the month! Hooray, I will no longer be classed as the stereotypical nerd who lives in his/her mother's basement! Instead, I will be a nerd who lives in someone's living room! :D Going to be living with three friends - Jessica, Tom and Luke - and it's going to be pretty awesome. It's a pretty small house, but it's still a house, so woo!

- In preparation for moving, I went through a metric fuck-ton of old schoolwork from grades 1-7. Essentially, I was sorting out the generic busywork that could safely be recycled from the important stuff I'd want to look back on later (e.g.: stories, photos, drawings, art projects, units that meant a lot to me). That was such a great experience, going through all that again. Though, I must say, it felt weird re-discovering physical evidence of things I no longer have any memory of doing. For example, I made a book report on The Andalite Chronicles out of construction paper and bad grammar, and for the life of me, I couldn't tell you what grade I was in or how I made it. o.O Also, I apparently wrote a short story called "Fireflies from Uranus" at one point. Wut.

- Current big project is an update of last year's top 250 anisong video list. It feels odd being so enthused to make this. My impetus for doing it is the need to recommend my favourite songs to others, and yet it is the thing that probably the least number of people will actually watch. People would much rather listen to a new podcast episode from me, so I could probably get my views out to more people through that. But no, I just keep feeling compelled to go back to these videos and make sure they're updated with all the cool new songs I've found over the past year. Huh.

- Speaking of the podcast: I feel incredibly guilty for not making a new episode since late June. I got back from Otakon and felt intimidated about including my con report in it, so much so that I just kept putting it off and putting it off. Now, oddly enough, the longer I go without making one, the more intimidated I feel about about actually making one. My paranoid self keeps telling me that people will be mad for the delay when I release it, and that will overshadow how they feel about the episode itself. I know that's not true, but it still affects my will to actually do some research, write out some show notes, and put my headset on. :/ There will be a new episode eventually; I haven't given up. It just might take a while to actually get over myself. In the meanwhile, I should probably post the third beta ep of Phenakistoscope to tide people over.

- As for Otakon: the con report will indeed be included in that upcoming podcast episode. Sorry guys, written con reports are not my forte. XD;;

Outside the bullet points, since this requires paragraphs, here's a [info]damned update! First up, I'm loving playing Scott Pilgrim so far. Still paranoid that I'm doing him some degree of disservice, getting his voice wrong, or forgetting key details, but that feeling is not as strong as it is for my other characters, which I think is a good sign. I also feel great that so many other players seem to like him despite the canon being relatively unknown in this sphere of the internet. :D

Speaking of those other characters, though, here's the bigger thing on my mind lately: I feel like I want to drop either Ophelia or Utena, but I can't decide 1) if I should, and 2) which one it'd be should I do so. One reason for this is that I really, really want to play Chane from Baccano! (see icon for this post), but I know I won't be able to handle four characters. The other reason is that I have various misgivings about the way I play those two.

For instance, I feel like I don't play up the right aspects of Ophelia, and that I can't strike the right balance between the intelligence she possesses as a warrior and the insanity that affects her reasoning and judgments. It's hard with her because a lot of what made her character in canon was her ability to back up her superiority complex with her Claymore powers, so even though I do what I would guess to be IC for her considering the situation, it still feels off-base from canon just because her actions and reactions have to be so different for the most part. Also, I feel like her motivations in the institute are all over the place, and that I can't focus her enough. On Utena's side, I feel like I play her alternately as too bland or too dramatic (mostly the former, but the latter came up for stuff like her visitor thread). She's such a strong, unique character in canon in my mind, and I feel like my attempts to live up to that just don't suffice.

There are reasons to keep both, however. Ophelia has a lot of great CR built up, being my longest-staying character. This is especially true with [info]kanara's characters, with whom I have plans to get Ophelia into more trouble in the future. I'm also looking forward to more sessions between her and Makiko Kisugi, because that first doctor thread for them was just so creepy and awesome. :D I also like having Utena as a truly friendly, good-hearted character, and she's made some good connections so far as well. She's also my favourite character in any medium, so it would feel weird to let her go.

Any Damned players or insightful onlookers: help?

Otakon or Bust! Update from Toronto

Sweet Jeebus, there's honest-to-goodness WiFi on this bus! Thank you, American Greyhound!

I meant to keep some sort of travelogue of my cross-country trip to Otakon here, but I unfortunately left my camera's connector cord at home, so I couldn't do the kind of posting I wanted to do. That and the Greyhound to Toronto didn't have WiFi, and I didn't want to do internet tethering from my phone to my laptop due to the data costs. So instead, now that I don't have to type on my phone, I'll put up a point-form list of some remarks I have from my trip so far, and I'll do a more detailed post-trip travelogue with pictures when I get back home.

Click here for TL;DR trip details )

Separate from the rest, here are some impressions I have of the various new anime I've watched both just before and while on this trip:

Today's episode: musings on the potential of HIMEKA and other artists spawned by the Animax Anison Grand Prix competition, gushing over 20+ year-old children's animal shows, ranting about ALI Project, and three all new requests (not recycled from the remnants of the old list). Also, Eryn talks way too fast for a good portion of the first segment or two. That's what happens when one records in a hurry, I guess. Sorry!

Welcome one and all to the first episode of Anime Utamiko, the soon-to-be number one anime music podcast on the internet! Why Utamiko instead of Utahime? Because the old podcast was officially put to rest ages ago, and because I wanted to tie this new one in to the domain name. Also because I like saying "miko" more than "hime." So there.

Songs played today:

I would call this is a rise from the ashes, but Anime Utahime already rose from the ashes more than a few times in its day, so I won't. I suppose I'll call this more of an experiment, then. You all wanted the anime music back. I wanted the anime music back. So let's try this again and see if I can get the ball rolling.

I won't promise anything long-term yet, because you all know I'm bad at making those sorts of podcast promises, especially when I have a lot on my internet plate already. However, I'd like to try anyway, just because I miss the hell out of talking to the internet about anime music. So long as I stay amateur, don't set off to make a cent from of this project, and always link to places where you can buy the music played, hopefully that'll keep us out of trouble. Cross your fingers, guys!

Anime Name That Tune + Current Anime Watching

For once, I finally got a full recording of one of my Name That Tune games. I've been meaning to record my games for years, but either I was without the recording equipment or I simply forgot it. This year, I made sure I had everything with me. For this game, thankfully, I had a camera person (thanks [info]miikarin!) who could do all the necessary panning and zooming for me, so the footage turned out fairly well. Unfortunately, this was not so for my other games, but we'll get to that when I actually finish getting those videos together.

I've captioned important words and phrases that may be hard to make out, mainly names of series and songs and whatnot, but also amusing quips.

Oh, and lastly, all the parts of this video add up to about an hour and a half's worth of footage, so good god, don't feel obligated to watch the whole thing. This is mainly for my own sake, since I'm just that nerdy. XD;; So without further ado:

Or if you're crazy and do want to watch the whole thing all the way through easily, here it is embedded in playlist format:

Oh, and while I'm here, I'm currently watching the 1980s Astro Boy and 009-1 in terms of anime, and I just finished watching the parody series The Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya. I'll discuss each of them briefly.

Astro Boy is surprisingly compelling considering it's a kids' show through and through, especially in the episodes involving Astro's rival/brother, Atlas (I'm so glad I watched the first two original Japanese episodes before diving into the rest of the series). Repetitive and cheesy? Sure. But Astro is a thoroughly likable character, as are most of the main side characters around him, and the morals are often a lot more complex than what one would expect from a show aimed at such young children. As the GeekNights said in their review of the series, the end of an episode is often Astro punching another robot to death and then looking sad and wondering why humans made them that way. D:

After watching the first few episodes on YouTube, I was impressed enough to buy the DVD collection. The DVDs ended up being extremely classy, complete with a color booklet featuring not only Astro Boy information but also other Tezuka history and artwork, remastered video, lots of nice extras, and both the English dub and slightly edited versions of the original Japanese episodes. The last part is especially nice, because while the English dub is quite charming in its way (and actually very true to the original dialogue, for the most part), it's also extremely stilted; the Japanese performances are much easier to sit through.

009-1 is far from a masterpiece, but it doesn't try to be one. All it wants to be is sexy, and full of action, espionage, and catsuits. Oh, and to be a tribute to the work of the original manga creator, Shotaro Ishinomori (no coincidence that he's also creator of Cyborg 009, though the two series aren't canonly related to one another). There's a decent amount of fanservice in this series and it's very much played up, but strangely enough, it's comes across as classier than the likes of, say, Najica or Agent AIKa. Mylene/009-1 still comes across as a very strong, competent female character despite her sometimes skimpy attire and gun nipples (don't ask; I swear, that element is more tastefully done than it sounds), which is more than I can say for the usual "Woops, my panties are showing! Tee-hee!" type of fanservice-y characters. I also love the retro art style and the mix of old-fashioned Cold War mentality with futuristic ray guns and cyborg technology.

I kind of wish I hadn't just bought the one volume of it, because I see a good deal for the whole series boxset on Amazon.ca. Anyone want to buy volume 1 off of me for cheap? It was only $10 at Otafest, so I'm thinking $5 is fair. Either way, I'm probably going to use what DVD footage I have to make my next AMV, because apparently no one on either AMV.org or YouTube has made a video featuring this show yet. This is frankly a crime, considering the good action scenes and aesthetic design of this show.

Oh, and check it out. I got this really nice figure of Mylene at Otafest. It's the biggest figure I own now, and after checking it over, I'm pretty sure it's not a bootleg either, so hooray! http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10052557a/20/7

Lastly, The Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya. Um. Well. What can I say. I really enjoyed this show, oddly enough, even though I've only seen about half of the real Haruhi Suzumiya series. It makes almost no sense, but it's adorable and always worth at least a chuckle or two. Several episodes are worth a lot more than that even. It's easier to show than tell in this case, so I'll link to an MP4 of my favourite episode, the Christmas special. The episode is only about five minutes long, so it won't eat up much of your time, and it's worth it if you're in the mood for something cute, fluffy, and bizarre. If you don't go AWWWWWW at Haruhi when the you'll-know-it-when-you-see-it moment happens, something is wrong with you: http://www.mediafire.com/?hy5tyniqckz

----

Also on my list of things to get started with are Dirty Pair: Project Eden, Odin: Starlight Mutiny (aka: Odin: Photon Space Sailer Starlight), Eden of the East episode 2, and Giant Robo. Wish me luck!

"Hasta la vista, baby."

nice holystone
Just wanted to say that I finally saw Terminator and Terminator 2, after having meant to for god knows how many years now. There are many well-known films that I am embarrassed to admit to not having seen, so it's good to knock two off my list (said list includes but is not limited to such films as Blade Runner, A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Goodfellas, Scarface, and any movie starring Bruce Campbell). And I got to see them on the big screen to boot; the Plaza was screening them on 35mm as a double bill. It was super sweet, especially for all the big action sequences. :D

This is just in time for the upcoming T4 too, so that's good. Now instead of just going to see it for the purposes of taking potshots at Christian "I WANT HIM OFF THE FUCKIN' SET!" Bale, I'll be able to do that and follow the plot better! Not bad!

Stolen from [info]lacidiana:

01. Choose an episode of an anime or television series you have on your computer. Make sure you're certain you want that one; you cannot change your mind once you complete this step. DO NOT TELL YOUR FLIST WHAT YOU CHOSE.
02. Make note of how long the episode is.
03. Ask your flist to choose a time between 00:00 and whatever the length of your episode is. Be specific, (ie: 19:11, 21:09, 02:42)
04. Make them an icon using THAT FRAME ONLY no matter what it is. And remember, you can only use that ONE episode you chose previously, even if the person posting isn't familiar with it.

I'm going to go with the variation Erin did and choose a few different episodes from different shows. Feel free to pick up to three timestamps. ^^ Also, yes, one of these is a movie. Shut up, I wanted an excuse to icon from it. XD

1. 22:34
2. 13:55
3. 24:59
4. 23:54
5. 1:16:50
6. 28:25

Also, side note: I finally found the perfect game to app Kozue from Utena at. Really, when you think about it, it's probably the only possible game for her that's actually good. If any of my RPing friends know the character, I think you may be able to figure out which one I mean. ;)

Nothing Lasts Forever

The internet is a wonderful, marvelous thing, and so is BitTorrent. Together, the two have allowed me to view a film that was previously almost impossible to see outside of extremely infrequent, one-off screenings. I love the age we live in. <3

For those who have never heard of it before, the film is called Nothing Lasts Forever. It was written and directed by long-time SNL writer Tom Schiller in 1984, and features several famous faces including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Sam Jaffe. I'm not an SNL officianado, but even I can see that that's a pretty impressive bill. The only reason it hasn't been released on home video or received a wider theatrical release is due a legal mess surrounding its use of copyrighted archival footage and footage from other media. Outside of special screenings, it's been shown a scant few times on Australian and European television and the like (which is where, I assume, the version I just saw originated), and that's about it.

The film itself is technically a comedy, but it has few laugh-out loud moments. I would call it more odd than funny, really, and it's actually rather beautiful in its campy oddity. The black and white 1940s-60s feel works very well throughout, especially when contrasted with the look of the scenes with the underground masters. The aforementioned use of stock footage is well-done too, and the actors (especially Zach Galligan in the lead and Bill Murray as the bus conductor) are all great. To get a plot summary and other interesting information, check the Wikipedia entry on the film here.

Anyway, if you would also like a chance to see this extremely rare and bizarre film, please support this torrent: Nothing Lasts Forever. Thanks to Scott from the FRC forum for linking it.

Creative Commons Album Cover Meme

  • Feb. 24th, 2009 at 1:36 PM
embrace the revolution
You know that randomly generated album cover meme that sometimes goes around (if you don't, stick with me anyway)? I did that meme a while back and was quite proud of the result that came out of it. A little while after posting my cover, however, I got an e-mail from the person who originally took the photograph I'd used for the meme. She sounded a bit upset that I'd used her photo without permission, and requested that my derivative cover be taken down. Respectful of the photographer's rights to her work, I agreed and took the photo down.

However, I still really wanted to do the meme again. It's a great concept for a simple Photoshop prompt. But I also didn't want to step on any photographer's toes again, even if the photographer never found my cover the way that one person did. So today, after being reminded of it by [info]bleakwinters, I decided to rewrite the album cover meme in such a way that nobody has to worry about potentially running into photo copyright issues. :)

Thus, the Creative Commons Album Cover Meme. Instructions, start!

1 - Go to Wikipedia's random article search at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 - Go to Random Quotations at http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page will be the title of your album.

3 - Go to RANDOM.ORG at http://www.random.org
In the box labeled "True Random Number Generator" set the Min field to 1 and the Max field to 24, and then click "Generate". Remember this number.

4 - Go to Flickr and click on "Creative Commons" or click http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/
Select any one of the listed licenses that does NOT contain NoDerivs. Click the "See More" link under that license.
Remember the number from RANDOM.ORG? Count the photos on the page from left to right, top to bottom until you reach that number (example: if your number was 14, your photo is the second to the left in the third row). The photo you land on is your album cover.

5 - Use an image editing program such as Photoshop to put it all together. Be sure to give attribution to the original photographer when you post your results.

6 - If you chose a license that includes ShareAlike (or if you just feel like it), go the the Creative Commons License Generator at http://creativecommons.org/license/
Fill out the form on the page, choosing a license that is as restrictive or more restrictive than the original photo's license. For more information on the various Creative Commons licenses, visit http://creativecommons.org/about/licenses/
When you have filled out the form, click "Select A License" and copy the HTML code that appears in the "What to do next" box on the next page. Paste this HTML underneath your completed work when you post it up.

7 - You're done! :D

My completed result! )
let's watch the monkey dance
Man, I really feel like posting an entry tonight (mainly thanks to the Damned friend meme), and yet I don't feel like writing about anything that's actually been happening in my life lately. It's not that nothing of interest has happened. Far from it; my birthday weekend was LE AWESOME with an extra helping of LE OMG LET'S DO IT AGAIN NEXT YEAR. Thanks to everyone who came! I'm just not in the mood to write about me at the moment. So there. ^^;;

Instead, I will post links to a bunch of videos I've seen over the past while that I think are neat. Hooray for the easy way out!

Atheist Buses

  • Jan. 20th, 2009 at 11:43 AM
starry bat signal
This is kind of old news, but I just found out about it the other day, so it's (exciting!) news to me. Apparently, a writer for The Guardian by the name of Ariane Sherine wrote an article describing a somewhat disturbing religious ad and attached website she had come across, and stated in the article that if all the atheists in London were to contribute £5, they could probably put up a more positive atheist slogan on buses to counteract such ads. She didn't expect people to take her idea seriously, but lots of people did, and so an official campaign was started to raise donations. They started with a target of £5500 and about 30 buses, but ended up with over £135,000 and about 800 buses.

So, starting at the beginning of this month, buses started to appear in the UK sporting the slogan "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life." URLs for the Atheist Campaign, the British Humanist Association and Richard Dawkins's website were posted in the corner of the ads.

A little later in the month, tube cards started appearing featuring the slogan underneath various quotes.

I think this is a great way to promote atheism and other non-religious viewpoints. It's peaceful, the use of the word "probably" makes the slogan as non-abrasive as it can be while still being catchy, the attached websites are all very positive (well, maybe Dawkins's site can be a bit blunt at times), and it'll spark debate thanks to all the news coverage and the sheer "Neat, you don't see that every day" feeling that the ads will give people when they see them go by. Predictably, there's been backlash in some corners of the religious world, but overall, I hear the religous have been welcoming the opportunity for debate and have been very understanding that atheists are just as much within their rights to promote their beliefs as religious organizations are.

So, yeah. Go, atheist buses, go! The official website for the campaign can be found here: http://www.atheistbus.org.uk/

UPDATE!
Apparently, Calgary Transit will be getting these ads Hooray! :D

Who Watches the Watchmen-tans?

  • Jan. 8th, 2009 at 3:57 PM
nibble
My eyes have been on news concerning the Watchmen movie for a while now, and especially since Christmas when a judge ruled that Fox still has rights to distribute it. I just hope that Warner Bros. and Fox come to a settlement and that the film comes out when it's supposed to. I really don't see what Fox has to gain by delaying the release indefinitely. Hopefully Warner's claim that Fox needs to demonstrate how exactly a delay in the release would cover damages for them better than a settlement is listened to.

Apart from being worried about that, though, lots of fun Watchmen stuff has still been coming up as of late. Lots of it has been cool, like more video journals and promotional photos, but the most amusing thing I've found so far is probably the Watchmen-tans. They're definitely funnier if you've read Watchmen, but they're pretty cute even if you haven't. ;) http://konron.koiwazurai.com/Watchmen.html

negi for brains
Because [info]miikarin reminded me of it, I went back to play Fantastic Contraption again, and lo and behold, some of my old contraption designs were still saved. :D If anyone is curious to see my incredibly inefficient (for the most part) designs, be my guest:

- Tip Me Over (Level 3: Mind the Gap)
- Inchworm Tank (Level 4: Junkyard)
- Li'l Dangly (Level 6: On a Roll)
- Weasel Car (Level 7: Full Up)
- Bounce! (Level 8: Higher)
- Hypotenuse Pwr! (Level 9: Around the Bend)
- Shoddy Convey (Level 10: Up the Hump)
- Airbridge (Level 11: Mission to Mars)
- Slowass Spider (Level 12: Up the Stairs) (it does make it! . . . Eventually! ^^;; )
- Convey Fling (Level 13: Big Ball)
- The Crusher (Level 14: Four Balls)
- Ball 'n' Chain (Level 15: Down Under)

Update: Ha! I finally beat Awash! :D

- Struggle Onward (Level 16: Awash)

Think I've taken the fruit thing far enough?

Yeah, maybe just a little.
